The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) has condemned the killing of six farmers by suspected bandits in Kujijiro farmlands, located in Kuyello District of Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The victims were reportedly attacked and killed on Monday while carrying out farming activities in the area.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, BEPU Chairman, Dr Isah Muhammad, described the incident as a tragic development that has plunged the entire Birnin Gwari community into grief and fear.

According to him, the attack highlights the persistent security challenges facing communities in Eastern Birnin Gwari despite ongoing efforts by authorities to restore peace and stability.

“The victims were mercilessly attacked and killed while carrying out their lawful farming activities,” Muhammad said.

He noted that Kuyello and several neighbouring communities have continued to experience attacks, killings and other criminal activities, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current security measures in the area.

Muhammad warned that the continued targeting of farmers and rural communities threatens the fragile peace being rebuilt across Birnin Gwari.

He stressed that insecurity in any part of the emirate should be treated as a collective concern.

“Birnin Gwari is one community with a shared history and common future. Whether in the East, West or Central parts of the emirate, the pain of one community is the pain of all,” he said.

The union expressed fears that if urgent action is not taken, many farmers may abandon their farmlands during the current planting season, potentially affecting food production and worsening food security challenges across Kaduna State and Northern Nigeria.

BEPU called on the Federal Government, Kaduna State Government and security agencies to intensify operations against criminal groups operating in the area.

The union specifically appealed to the Minister of Defence, the National Security Adviser, the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to strengthen security presence in Kuyello and surrounding communities.

It also urged the Kaduna State Government to provide additional support to enhance the protection of lives and property in Eastern Birnin Gwari.

The union extended condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the repose of their souls.

BEPU further encouraged residents to remain calm, law-abiding and continue cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist efforts to combat insecurity in the region.
