Sultan Orders Nationwide Moon Sighting as Muslims Prepare for Islamic New Year 1448AH
Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has directed Muslims across Nigeria to observe the Muharram moon sighting on June 15, 2026, ahead of the Islamic New Year.
Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III has directed Muslims across Nigeria to participate in the nationwide sighting of the new moon of Muharram 1448AH, marking preparations for the commencement of the Islamic New Year.
The directive was issued through a statement released by the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the statement, Monday, June 15, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Zulhijjah 1447AH, has been officially designated for the moon sighting exercise across the country.
The Sultan urged Muslims nationwide to observe the evening sky carefully after sunset and report any credible sighting of the new crescent through established traditional channels.
He emphasized that all confirmed sightings should be communicated to the nearest District Head or Village Head, who will then relay the information to the Sultanate Council for verification and announcement.
The moon sighting exercise is a key religious practice that determines the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar, which guides major religious observances such as fasting periods and sacred events.
Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is regarded as one of the four sacred months in Islam and carries significant spiritual importance for Muslims globally.
The Sultanate Council is expected to make an official declaration on the commencement of Muharram 1448AH after receiving and verifying reports from various parts of the country.
The Sultan stressed that accurate observation and proper reporting remain essential for maintaining consistency and unity in Islamic calendar determination across Nigeria.
Religious leaders have consistently encouraged widespread participation in the moon sighting exercise, noting that it strengthens communal responsibility and ensures adherence to established religious tradition.
The Islamic New Year is often observed with prayers, reflection, and renewed commitment to faith, with Muslims using the period to seek spiritual growth and reconciliation.
Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has historically played a central role in coordinating Islamic religious affairs in Nigeria alongside the Sultanate Council.
The announcement comes as Muslims prepare to usher in a new year, with expectations of unity and coordinated observance of Islamic events nationwide.
The Sultanate Council is expected to issue the final confirmation once all verified moon sighting reports have been reviewed, reinforcing its longstanding role as the authoritative body for Islamic calendar decisions in Nigeria.
