Students Showcase AI Innovations at DeepFunding Hackathon
Twelve student teams showcased AI solutions at the DeepFunding National AI Hackathon in Lagos, with a healthcare-focused multilingual assistant winning top prize, as participants developed innovations in education, accessibility, and healthcare to promote local AI-driven problem-solving in Nigeria.
Twelve student teams from across Nigeria have demonstrated a range of artificial intelligence solutions at the grand finale of the DeepFunding National AI Hackathon held in Lagos.
The event brought together young innovators who worked on projects aimed at solving real-world problems, particularly in areas such as healthcare access, language inclusion, education, and assistive technology.
The competition followed a nationwide selection process across different regions, with top teams advancing to the final stage for a 12-hour build and pitch session.
At the end of the contest, the winning team presented an AI-powered healthcare assistant designed to provide medical guidance in multiple Nigerian languages, helping to bridge communication gaps in healthcare delivery.
Other finalists developed solutions including community healthcare platforms, multilingual support systems, medication dispensing tools, and navigation aids for visually impaired users.
Organisers said the hackathon was designed to encourage local innovation and strengthen Africa’s participation in global artificial intelligence development, while also promoting collaboration among young developers.
The initiative also highlighted growing interest in AI among Nigerian students, with participants describing the experience as an opportunity to turn ideas into practical, scalable solutions.
