Strong Institutions Are Africa's True Growth Engine — MTN Chairman

MTN Group Chairman, Mcebisi Jonas, has said Africa's long-term economic growth will depend more on the strength of its institutions than on its natural resources, urging governments across the continent to prioritise transparency, good governance and policy consistency.

Speaking at a business forum, Jonas noted that while Africa possesses abundant natural and human resources, sustainable development can only be achieved through strong public institutions capable of implementing sound policies, enforcing the rule of law and creating an environment that encourages investment.

He stressed that investors are more likely to commit long-term capital to countries with stable regulatory frameworks, independent institutions and predictable economic policies. According to him, these factors are essential for driving innovation, expanding businesses and creating employment opportunities across the continent.

Jonas also highlighted the role of the private sector in Africa's development, saying businesses must work closely with governments to promote digital transformation, financial inclusion and infrastructure development. He added that stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors would help unlock the continent's economic potential.

The MTN chairman expressed optimism about Africa's future, urging leaders to focus on institution-building rather than short-term political interests. He maintained that accountable governance, effective regulation and inclusive economic policies would provide the foundation for sustainable growth and improved living standards across the continent.
