The African Action Congress has announced the resignation of human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore as the party’s National Chairman following his emergence as the AAC presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made in a statement issued Tuesday shortly after the party’s presidential primaries held in Abuja, where Sowore secured the ticket through a unanimous endorsement by delegates and party leaders.

According to the statement, Samuel Ajeigbe has now been appointed as the new National Chairman of the AAC, marking a major leadership transition within the opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Omoyele Sowore has officially stepped down as the National Chairman of the African Action Congress.

“The party hereby welcomes Samuel Ajeigbe as the new National Chairman of our great party,” the statement read.

Sowore’s resignation came only hours after he was officially presented with the party’s presidential flag amid cheers from supporters and delegates representing different states across the country.

Speaking after accepting the nomination, Sowore said the AAC was established to build a “new Nigeria” free from corruption, insecurity and poor governance. He also praised party members for remaining committed to the party’s ideals despite political pressure and economic difficulties facing Nigerians.

The activist further used the occasion to criticise the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing the party of incompetence and attempting to manipulate public perception ahead of the next election cycle.

Sowore specifically questioned claims surrounding the scale of participation in President Bola Tinubu’s recent presidential primary victory within the APC.

“There is no way APC can have 10 million people as members,” Sowore said during his address.

“I can guarantee you that APC cannot boast of 10,000 members.”

His comments come amid heightened political activity across major parties as aspirants and political blocs continue preparations and coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The AAC leadership change is expected to allow Sowore focus fully on his presidential campaign while the party reorganises its national structure under new leadership.
