South Africa Beat South Korea 1-0 to Make World Cup History

South Africa secured a historic place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating South Korea 1-0 in their final Group A fixture on Wednesday.

The victory marked the first time Bafana Bafana have progressed beyond the group stage of the World Cup, completing a remarkable turnaround after opening their campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to group winners Mexico.

Playing at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, South Africa entered the match knowing victory would likely secure qualification to the Round of 32. After drawing with the Czech Republic in their second group game, Hugo Broos’ side produced a disciplined and determined performance to overcome the Asian representatives.

South Korea started the match brightly and nearly took an early lead when defender Kim Min-jae’s powerful header was cleared off the line by Aubrey Modiba. Lee Kang-in also came close for the Koreans, but his effort drifted narrowly wide.

South Africa gradually settled into the contest and began creating chances of their own. Evidence Makgopa missed a golden opportunity in the 30th minute after South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu parried a shot from Thalente Mbatha into his path. However, the striker failed to capitalise, directing his effort straight at the goalkeeper.

South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo made a significant tactical change at halftime, introducing captain Son Heung-min after surprisingly leaving the experienced forward on the bench at the start of the match.

Despite the introduction of Son and other attacking substitutions, it was South Africa that found the breakthrough. In the 63rd minute, Tshepang Moremi delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where Thapelo Maseko calmly fired past Kim Seung-gyu to give Bafana Bafana the lead.

The goal sparked jubilant celebrations among South African players and supporters, while South Korea pushed forward desperately in search of an equaliser. However, the South African defence, marshalled by captain Ronwen Williams, held firm to preserve the advantage.

The result secured South Africa’s place in the Round of 32, where they will face co-hosts Canada in Los Angeles on June 28. Mexico finished top of Group A with a perfect nine points after winning all three of their matches, while South Africa claimed second place and a historic passage into the knockout rounds.
