Six UN Secretary-General Candidates Face Televised Debate Thursday
Six candidates vying to succeed António Guterres as UN Secretary-General will participate in a televised debate on Thursday, outlining their visions for the organisation ahead of the UN's leadership selection process.
Six candidates seeking to become the next United Nations Secretary-General are set to participate in a live televised debate on Thursday, offering them an opportunity to present their visions for the future of the global body before an international audience. The debate forms part of the UN's push for a more transparent and inclusive selection process ahead of the end of António Guterres' second term on December 31, 2026.
The candidates expected to take part include Michelle Bachelet (Chile), Rebeca Grynspan (Costa Rica), María Fernanda Espinosa (Ecuador), Rafael Grossi (Argentina), Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett (Guyana) and Macky Sall (Senegal). They are expected to outline their priorities on issues such as global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, UN reform and strengthening multilateral cooperation.
The debate will be broadcast live from the UN General Assembly Hall in New York and will include questions from member states and civil society representatives. It is designed to give the global public greater insight into the candidates' leadership styles and policy positions before the formal selection process advances.
The next UN Secretary-General will be recommended by the UN Security Council before a final appointment by the UN General Assembly. The selection has attracted significant global interest, with many member states and advocacy groups calling for the appointment of the first woman to lead the United Nations.
