SGF Slams Makinde for Politicising Oyo Pupils’ Abduction

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his comments on the abduction of pupils and teachers in the state, accusing the governor of politicising a sensitive security issue.

Akume said President Bola Tinubu was more concerned with securing the safe release of the abducted victims than making telephone calls, insisting that the administration prioritised intelligence-driven security operations over public gestures.

The SGF made the remarks in Abuja while receiving members of the Global Association of Christian and Muslim Youth for Peace and Development, led by its President, Peter Bassey. His comments were contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Yomi Odunuga.

The remarks followed Governor Makinde’s complaint that President Tinubu had not contacted him after armed men abducted pupils and teachers from three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. Makinde had also called for a United Nations-backed investigation into the incident, saying Nigerians deserved a transparent account of what transpired during the 56-day captivity of the victims.

Responding to the governor’s position, Akume questioned the relevance of a telephone call during a complex rescue operation, arguing that the priority was to ensure the safe return of the victims.

According to him, the successful rescue demonstrated the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives through carefully coordinated security strategies rather than public pronouncements.

Akume described President Tinubu as a leader who focuses on results instead of rhetoric, saying his administration remained determined to combat insecurity through practical and effective measures.

He maintained that terrorism, kidnapping and other security threats required intelligence-led responses and sustained operational planning rather than political debate.

The SGF added that the President had continued to support security agencies in restoring peace across the country, stressing that Nigerians should focus on the outcome of the rescue rather than political disagreements.

He also commended the visiting youth association for promoting peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims, describing religious harmony as vital to national development.

Earlier, the association’s President, Peter Bassey, said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with the SGF’s office, praising Akume’s commitment to public service and national unity while reaffirming the group’s dedication to fostering peace across Nigeria.
