Mbappé, Yamal Ready for Defining World Cup Duel as France Face Spain

France and Spain will renew one of international football’s fiercest rivalries on Tuesday as they battle for a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with global stars Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal expected to headline a blockbuster semi-final.

France enter the encounter aiming to reach a third consecutive World Cup final after lifting the trophy in Russia in 2018 before finishing runners-up to Argentina in Qatar four years later. Spain, meanwhile, are chasing only the second World Cup title in their history, having previously triumphed in South Africa in 2010.

Mbappé has once again underlined his status as one of football’s most feared forwards, scoring eight goals to share the tournament’s Golden Boot lead with Argentina captain Lionel Messi. The Real Madrid star will spearhead a French attack that also features Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué.

France coach Didier Deschamps, who will step down after the tournament following 14 years in charge, is hoping to end his remarkable tenure with another World Cup triumph. Having already won the competition as both a player and coach, Deschamps believes Spain enter the contest as favourites.

Spain have steadily grown into the tournament after opening their campaign with a goalless draw against Cape Verde. Since then, Luis de la Fuente’s side have impressed with disciplined defending and an effective possession-based style that has conceded only one goal throughout the competition.

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has rediscovered his best form after recovering from a hamstring injury, delivering an outstanding display in Spain’s quarter-final victory over Belgium. The Barcelona winger dismissed suggestions that Spain should fear France, pointing instead to recent victories over Les Bleus at Euro 2024 and in the 2025 UEFA Nations League.

The 19-year-old admitted that reaching Sunday’s final would be the perfect birthday present after celebrating his milestone earlier this week.

Victory for either side will secure a place in the World Cup final in New York, where they could meet either defending champions Argentina or England. With two of the tournament’s strongest squads preparing for a defining showdown, fans are expecting one of the most memorable matches of the championship.
