Seyi Awolowo Blames Brands, CEOs for Nigeria's 'Olodo Uprising'
Seyi Awolowo says brands and corporate leaders have contributed to Nigeria's "Olodo Uprising" by promoting virality over academic excellence, urging greater recognition of intellectual achievements to encourage education and national development.
Former Big Brother Naija housemate Seyi Awolowo has blamed brands and corporate leaders for contributing to what he described as Nigeria's growing "Olodo Uprising," arguing that the country's increasing celebration of entertainment over academic excellence is fuelling anti-intellectualism. Speaking on The Nigeria Meter Podcast, Awolowo said society must place greater value on education and intellectual achievements to inspire young people.
Awolowo recalled a time when academic competitions such as the Cowbell Mathematics Championship, debates and other intellectual pursuits were widely celebrated, motivating students to strive for excellence. He questioned why Nigerian students who recently excelled in an international spelling competition did not receive the same level of public recognition often reserved for celebrities and social media personalities.
He also criticised brands for prioritising social media engagement and virality over promoting academic role models, arguing that this has contributed to a decline in the value placed on intelligence and competence. According to him, many of the same companies later complain that Nigerian graduates are unemployable, despite helping shape the culture that overlooks academic achievement.
Awolowo urged businesses and the public to celebrate intellectual accomplishments alongside entertainment, warning that sacrificing education for online popularity could have long-term consequences for Nigeria's workforce and national development. He stressed that commercial success should not come at the expense of the country's intellectual growth.
