Senegal Appoint Vieira as Head Coach After World Cup Disappointment
Senegal appoint Patrick Vieira as head coach, tasking the former Arsenal captain with rebuilding the national team after World Cup struggles.
Senegal have appointed former France international Patrick Vieira as their new head coach following the dismissal of Pape Thiaw after the team’s disappointing World Cup campaign.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday, describing the decision as a strategic move aimed at building a high-level technical team capable of matching the country’s sporting ambitions.
Vieira, who was born in Senegal but moved to France at the age of eight, was ratified as the new head coach on Monday.
The federation announced his appointment on social media with a picture of the former midfielder smiling alongside the message, “Welcome to Senegal, coach.”
His official presentation will take place at a later date.
Vieira’s immediate task will be to rebuild the national team following Senegal’s difficult World Cup campaign, which ended with a defeat to Belgium in the last 32.
Thiaw was dismissed less than two weeks after the tournament. He had been appointed Senegal coach in 2024 after previously representing the country as a player.
The FSF president had previously said that tensions and toxicity surrounded the national team during the World Cup after Thiaw reportedly requested an improved salary.
Senegal also suffered defeats against France and Norway during the group stage before recovering with a 5-0 victory over Iraq, which secured their qualification for the knockout phase.
The appointment of Vieira represents a major change in direction for the Lions of Teranga as they seek to restore stability and competitiveness.
Vieira brings extensive experience from both his playing and coaching careers.
He was a key member of Arsenal’s successful side that won three English league titles between 1998 and 2004. He subsequently played for Juventus and Inter Milan before finishing his playing career at Manchester City.
After retiring, Vieira began his coaching career with New York City FC in 2016.
He later returned to France to manage Nice between 2018 and 2020, gaining further experience in European football.
The former midfielder also has experience managing in the Premier League and other major competitions, making him one of the most experienced coaches Senegal have appointed in recent years.
The FSF said his appointment was designed to support Senegal’s wider sporting ambitions while establishing a stronger technical structure around the national team.
Vieira will now be expected to guide Senegal into a new phase and help the team recover from its World Cup disappointment.
