At least nine people have been killed and 28 others injured after Russia launched a fresh wave of missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, causing widespread destruction to residential buildings and critical infrastructure. The overnight bombardment triggered explosions across several districts of the city, leaving emergency workers scrambling to rescue people trapped beneath collapsed structures.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the attacks caused significant damage in multiple parts of the capital, with fires breaking out in apartment buildings, warehouses and other facilities. One of the worst-hit areas was the Shevchenkivskyi district, where part of a residential building collapsed after being struck, trapping several residents beneath the rubble. Rescue teams continued search-and-recovery operations throughout the day.

Ukrainian authorities said children were among those injured in the assault, while emergency services worked to extinguish fires and evacuate residents from damaged buildings. The attack also disrupted electricity supplies in parts of Kyiv and damaged civilian infrastructure, adding to the humanitarian impact of the strike.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the latest bombardment, describing it as another deliberate attack on civilians. He renewed calls on Ukraine's international partners to provide additional air defence systems, particularly Patriot missile batteries, which Kyiv says are essential for intercepting Russia's ballistic missiles.

The assault comes just days after another large-scale Russian aerial attack on Ukraine, underscoring the continued intensity of the conflict despite repeated international appeals for a ceasefire. Fighting has remained fierce along several frontlines, while both Russia and Ukraine continue to carry out long-range strikes deep inside each other's territory.
