The House of Representatives has summoned the nation’s Service Chiefs and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, to appear before lawmakers over the escalating wave of insecurity across the country.

Worried by the unabating rate of killings and abductions across the country, the House of Representatives on Tuesday summoned the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the nation’s Service Chiefs to appear before the parliament.

The resolution was reached during Tuesday's plenary session following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Hon. Sulaiman Gumi, the lawmaker representing Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State.

Moving the motion, Gumi expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation, noting that bandits and terrorists have continued to unleash terror on unsuspecting citizens, leaving a trail of death, displacement, and mass abductions in various parts of the country.

The House adopted the motion, mandating the top security brass to brief lawmakers on the current security architecture, ongoing military operations, and the strategies being deployed to combat the rising tide of criminality.

The legislative summon comes on the heels of renewed public outcry over the safety of citizens. Recent weeks have seen a spike in coordinated attacks by armed groups, including the mass abduction of schoolchildren, attacks on farming communities, and highway kidnappings.

The persistent attacks have triggered widespread condemnation, with some concerned Nigerians and civil society organisations calling on President Bola Tinubu to overhaul the security architecture and inject fresh hands capable of decisively tackling the crisis.

Although a specific date for the security chiefs' appearance was not immediately disclosed, the leadership of the Green Chamber indicated that the engagement would be prioritised to address the urgent security gaps threatening national stability.
