Reps Begin Debate on Bill to Establish Rural Infrastructure Commission

The House of Representatives has commenced debate on a bill seeking to establish the National Commission for Rural Infrastructure Development (NACRID), a proposed agency aimed at coordinating and accelerating infrastructure projects in rural communities across Nigeria. The bill has passed its first legislative stage and is now undergoing further consideration by lawmakers.

The proposed commission would be responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing rural infrastructure projects, including roads, water supply, electricity, healthcare facilities, schools and other essential public amenities. Supporters of the bill argue that the commission would help bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas by ensuring more focused and sustainable investment in underserved communities.

During the debate, lawmakers stressed that poor infrastructure remains a major obstacle to economic growth and improved living standards in rural Nigeria. They noted that a dedicated commission could improve project delivery, reduce duplication of efforts among government agencies and promote balanced national development.

If eventually passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by the President, the commission would serve as a specialised federal agency tasked with driving rural infrastructure development nationwide. The bill will proceed through additional legislative stages, including committee review and further debate, before a final decision is taken.
