Nigeria seeks stronger economic, security partnership with Germany

Nigeria has called for deeper cooperation with Germany in economic development, security, renewable energy, digital innovation and regional peace as both countries move to strengthen their long-standing bilateral relationship. The appeal was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, during a bilateral meeting in Abuja with Germany's Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul.

Describing Germany as one of Nigeria's most important strategic partners in Europe, Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the relationship has grown beyond diplomacy to include trade, investment, development cooperation, education, science and technology, migration, renewable energy, and peace and security. She also commended Germany for its continued support for Nigeria's development goals and the stability of West Africa.

The minister urged increased German investment in key sectors of the Nigerian economy, including renewable energy, manufacturing, critical minerals, transport infrastructure, agriculture, digital technology and healthcare. She also called for stronger collaboration in education, research, innovation and vocational training to boost human capital development.

She noted that growing global challenges such as terrorism, violent extremism, climate change, irregular migration, food insecurity and economic uncertainty make stronger international partnerships more important than ever. Nigeria also reaffirmed its commitment to working with Germany and ECOWAS to promote regional peace, security and economic resilience.
