Reports of Bandits Attack in Lagos Schools Fake — LG Chairman
Imota LCDA chairman and GBEDU 100.1FM have dismissed viral claims of a bandit attack in a Lagos school, confirming no incident occurred and apologising for spreading unverified information.
The Imota Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and the management of GBEDU 100.1FM have dismissed reports alleging a bandit attack on a primary school in Imota, Lagos State, describing the claims as false and misleading.
The rumour, which circulated widely on Monday through social media and a live radio phone-in programme, alleged that armed bandits invaded a public school in the area and killed two schoolgirls. The claim sparked panic among residents and parents.
Reacting to the development, the Executive Chairman of Imota LCDA, Benson Sunday Ayodele, issued a statement categorically denying the incident.
He said there was no verified report, official record, or security intelligence confirming any such attack within the community.
“The attention of the Imota Local Council Development Area has been drawn to a viral video circulating on GBEDU 100.1FM and social media platforms alleging that two girls were killed at a primary school in Imota LCDA,” the statement read.
“We wish to state categorically that the information is false, misleading, and entirely unfounded.”
The chairman expressed concern over the spread of unverified information capable of causing fear and disrupting public peace, urging residents to disregard the report and remain calm.
He further advised members of the public to rely only on official security sources for accurate updates regarding safety matters in the community.
“The safety and security of all residents remain a top priority of our administration,” he added, encouraging citizens to go about their normal activities without fear.
Meanwhile, GBEDU 100.1FM has issued a formal apology over the broadcast, admitting that the report was aired without proper verification.
According to the station, the misinformation originated from callers during a live phone-in programme, where unverified claims about an attack in Imota were made on air.
The management said immediate checks were conducted with the Nigeria Police, local government officials, and community leaders, all of which confirmed that no such attack occurred.
The station acknowledged the distress caused by the broadcast and took responsibility for the lapse, promising to strengthen its editorial verification processes.
It also appealed to residents to remain calm and assured the public of its commitment to responsible journalism and accurate reporting going forward.
