Port Harcourt to Host 10,000 Runners for International Marathon

Port Harcourt is expected to welcome about 10,000 runners from Nigeria, other West African countries and East Africa for the 2026 Port Harcourt International Marathon, scheduled to hold on November 14 in the Rivers State capital. The 21-kilometre half-marathon marks a major expansion of the event after a decade of hosting participants mainly from within Nigeria.

The Convener of the marathon, Goodluck Azunwena, said the 2026 edition would go beyond athletics by promoting tourism, healthy living, youth empowerment, economic growth and global visibility for Port Harcourt. He described the event, themed “Green Race,” as a platform designed to showcase the city’s culture and attract international attention.

Azunwena said previous editions attracted about 5,000 registered runners, but participation has now been expanded following growing interest from within and outside Nigeria. He added that the organisers had secured the support of the Rivers State Government and private partners, while arrangements had been made to ensure adequate security and a hitch-free event. (An official of the marathon, Diri Dikibujuri, said the 10th edition had been tagged “Port Harcourt to the World” as the event transitions from the Port Harcourt City Marathon to the Port Harcourt International Marathon. She said runners from across Nigeria, West Africa and East Africa would participate in the competition.

According to her, the “Green Race” theme represents life, renewal, growth and Port Harcourt’s identity as the Garden City. She added that the initiative would combine sports, culture, sustainability, education, environmental advocacy and youth development, with activities planned before, during and after the race.
