Police Invite SDP Leaders Over Deepening Leadership Crisis
Nigeria’s Police Force has reportedly invited members of the SDP National Working Committee amid an escalating internal leadership crisis, with rival factions disputing control of the party’s headquarters and recognition by INEC, raising concerns about its preparedness for the 2027 elections.
Nigeria’s Police Force has reportedly summoned members of the Social Democratic Party’s National Working Committee as the party’s internal leadership dispute continues to escalate. The invitation is linked to allegations surrounding an attempted takeover of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
SDP National Chairman Sadiq Gombe confirmed that party officials were informed about the police invitation, although he stated that he did not personally receive a formal notice. According to him, the matter is connected to the ongoing battle over the party’s leadership structure and control of its headquarters.
The crisis within the SDP has intensified in recent months following conflicting claims over the party’s authentic leadership. Rival factions have exchanged accusations involving misconduct, financial irregularities, and unconstitutional actions.
Gombe also maintained that previous petitions had already been submitted to security agencies, including the police, the EFCC, and the ICPC, over alleged financial impropriety involving former party officials. He argued that the dispute remains an internal party matter that should be resolved according to the party’s constitution and legal processes.
The dispute further deepened after the Independent National Electoral Commission recognised the Shehu Gabam-led faction earlier this year following court-related developments, a decision that continues to be challenged by rival SDP figures.
Political observers say the prolonged crisis could affect the party’s preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections if a lasting resolution is not reached soon.
