Police Dismiss Rumoured Curfew In Ondo, Warn Against Fake News
The Ondo State Police Command has denied reports of a traditional curfew in Akure, warning residents against spreading fake news capable of causing fear and public tension.
The Ondo State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating in Akure metropolis claiming that a traditional curfew had been imposed, describing the information as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said there was no curfew in place and no security situation warranting panic among residents.
“The command states categorically that no such curfew exists and there is no security development warranting panic or apprehension among residents,” the statement said.
The police alleged that the rumour was deliberately being spread to create fear, confusion, and unnecessary tension across the state.
Residents were advised to ignore the claims and continue their lawful activities while relying only on verified and credible sources of information.
The command also warned individuals or groups involved in spreading fake news and misinformation to desist, stressing that such actions threaten public peace and security.
According to the police, anyone found culpable would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The clarification followed a similar denial reportedly issued by the Palace of the Deji of Akure, which also rejected claims of a 9 pm curfew in the state capital.
Ondo State has experienced growing security concerns in recent months, including incidents of kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related violence in parts of the state.
However, the police assured residents of their commitment to maintaining peace and safeguarding lives and property across the state.
