Police DIG Pushes Body-Worn Cameras for Officers’ Accountability

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Southwest zone, Adegoke Fayoade, has called for the introduction of body-worn cameras for police officers to improve accountability, transparency and professionalism in policing operations.

Fayoade made the call during a working visit to the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) office as part of his tour of the six states within the Southwest region.

The development was disclosed in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Monday by the Executive Secretary of the LSSTF, Ayodele Ogunsan.

Speaking during the engagement, the DIG described Lagos as a critical component of national stability, stressing that the state must continue to adopt modern security solutions to maintain peace and economic growth.

He noted that although the security situation in Lagos remained relatively stable, there was a need for continuous improvement through technology, modern equipment and global policing standards.

“If the security of Lagos is not solid, the security of Nigeria is in trouble. But once Lagos remains stable and secure, it contributes significantly to national peace and economic prosperity,” Fayoade said.

The police officer emphasised the importance of adopting scientific approaches to policing, adding that advanced technology would strengthen operational effectiveness and improve public trust.

He specifically recommended the deployment of body-worn cameras for officers on patrol and during field operations.

According to him, the devices would provide real-time records of police activities, promote professionalism and ensure greater accountability in interactions between officers and members of the public.

“We need equipment such as body cameras that can provide transparency and accountability whenever officers are on patrol. Their activities will be recorded, ensuring professionalism and building trust between the police and the public,” he said.

Fayoade also praised the LSSTF for its continued support to security agencies in Lagos, describing its interventions as vital to improving operational capacity.

Ogunsan, while welcoming the DIG, commended the Inspector-General of Police for encouraging senior officers to return to their operational zones to reassess security strategies.

He disclosed that Lagos was expanding investments in security technology, including drone surveillance, aerial monitoring and intelligence-driven patrol operations.

Ogunsan said proactive measures were necessary to prevent criminal elements from infiltrating the Southwest region.

He added that the LSSTF would continue supporting security agencies through innovation and technology-driven initiatives aimed at protecting lives and property across Lagos State.
