The Rivers State Police Command has detained a number of officers captured in a viral video allegedly extorting motorists along a road in the state.
The action followed the circulation of the footage on social media, where the officers were seen stopping road users and reportedly demanding money. The video sparked widespread criticism and renewed concerns over misconduct by some members of the police force.
In response, the command confirmed that the officers involved had been identified and taken into custody pending the outcome of an investigation. Police authorities stated that disciplinary procedures had already commenced and assured the public that anyone found culpable would face appropriate sanctions.
The command reiterated its commitment to professionalism and accountability, stressing that extortion and other forms of misconduct are contrary to the values of the Nigeria Police Force. It also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting unethical behaviour by officers to enable prompt action.
Officials added that the findings of the investigation would be made public once the process is concluded, while reaffirming efforts to strengthen public confidence in policing across the state.
