Oyo Principal's Husband Explains Why He Blocked Kidnappers During Wife's Captivity

Professor Wole Alamu, husband of Mrs Rachael Alamu, the Oyo school principal recently rescued after spending more than 50 days in captivity, has revealed that he eventually blocked the kidnappers' phone numbers during negotiations because their repeated threats were taking a serious toll on his health.

Speaking during a thanksgiving service following his wife's release, Alamu said the constant communication with the abductors left him emotionally exhausted and physically unwell. He explained that the repeated calls and threats caused severe psychological distress and contributed to high blood pressure, forcing him to cut off direct contact with the kidnappers.

Mrs Alamu was among the teachers and pupils abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026. She and the other victims regained their freedom after spending more than 50 days in captivity following a security operation announced by the Federal Government.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Professor Alamu expressed gratitude to God, the security agencies and everyone who supported the family throughout the difficult period. He described the experience as one of the most challenging moments of his life and thanked those who stood by them until the victims were safely reunited with their families.

The abduction drew nationwide attention and renewed concerns over insecurity and school safety in Nigeria. Although the victims have regained their freedom, the incident has continued to fuel calls for stronger measures to protect schools and prevent similar attacks on communities across the country.
