Oyo Declares Tuesday Work-Free Day to Mark Islamic New Year
Oyo State has declared Tuesday a work-free day to celebrate Hijrah 1448AH and promote peace, unity, and reflection.
The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, who said the government recognises the significance of the Islamic New Year to Muslims across the state.
According to Oyelade, the Hijrah marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD, an event regarded as one of the most important milestones in Islamic history. He noted that the work-free day was declared as a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community in Oyo State.
The commissioner urged residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in the state and across Nigeria. He also encouraged citizens to reflect on the lessons and values associated with the Hijrah, including faith, perseverance, sacrifice, and communal harmony.
Oyelade called on Muslims and other residents to embrace the spirit of brotherhood and togetherness that the Islamic New Year represents. He emphasized the need for collective prayers for the continued progress, stability, and development of Oyo State and the nation.
He further stated that the Hijrah period offers an opportunity for spiritual renewal and reflection, encouraging people to strengthen their commitment to peaceful coexistence and mutual understanding.
The state government expressed hope that the celebration would promote unity among residents and reinforce shared values that contribute to social harmony and national development.
The declaration means that government offices and public institutions in the state will remain closed on Tuesday in observance of the Islamic New Year celebration.
