Over 1,100 Host Community Projects Ongoing in Niger Delta – NUPRC
The NUPRC says more than 1,100 development projects are currently underway in Niger Delta host communities under the Host Communities Development Trust, with investments focused on infrastructure, healthcare, education and economic empowerment.
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has disclosed that more than 1,100 development projects are currently being executed across host communities in the Niger Delta under the Host Communities Development Trust (HCDT) framework established by the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021. The commission said the projects are aimed at improving infrastructure, education, healthcare and livelihoods in oil-producing communities.
Speaking at a stakeholders' engagement, NUPRC Chief Executive Gbenga Komolafe said the Host Communities Development Trust has significantly strengthened relationships between oil companies and their host communities while reducing tensions in the region. He noted that the initiative has attracted substantial financial contributions from oil operators, with the funds being managed through registered community trusts to ensure transparency and accountability.
Komolafe explained that the projects span multiple sectors, including roads, schools, hospitals, water supply, youth empowerment and environmental sustainability. He added that the commission continues to monitor implementation through its digital HostComply platform to ensure that projects are completed and the benefits reach the intended communities.
The NUPRC reaffirmed its commitment to fully implementing the Petroleum Industry Act, saying the Host Communities Development Trust remains a key tool for promoting sustainable development, reducing restiveness and ensuring that oil-producing communities benefit directly from Nigeria's petroleum resources.
