Oba of Benin Orders Spiritual Warfare Against Banditry, Violent Crimes
The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has directed traditionalists across Edo South to launch spiritual warfare and place curses on bandits, kidnappers and other criminals amid rising insecurity.
The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has directed traditional worshippers across Edo South Senatorial District to commence what he described as “spiritual warfare” against banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The monarch gave the directive on Tuesday during a meeting with native doctors, priests and priestesses at the Benin Royal Palace.
According to the Oba, the gathering was convened in response to the growing insecurity affecting different parts of Nigeria and was inspired by divine instruction as well as guidance from royal ancestors.
Oba Ewuare II said traditional institutions have a responsibility to support government efforts aimed at restoring peace and security in society.
He stressed that while security agencies continue to confront criminal elements through conventional means, traditionalists should also contribute through spiritual interventions intended to protect communities and discourage criminal activities.
The monarch therefore instructed traditional priests and priestesses within Edo South to begin a week-long spiritual exercise dedicated to seeking divine intervention for the safety and stability of the land.
According to him, the exercise will involve prayers, rituals and spiritual supplications aimed at exposing and confronting those involved in criminal acts, including banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and other forms of violence.
Oba Ewuare II said the programme would culminate in a major spiritual gathering scheduled for July 2, 2026, at the Benin Royal Palace.
He disclosed that the final event would commence at 6 a.m. and would feature the pronouncement of curses against criminals and individuals who aid, sponsor or collaborate with them.
The monarch expressed concern over the increasing threat posed by criminal activities and urged all stakeholders to play active roles in safeguarding communities.
The directive comes amid renewed efforts by authorities in Edo State to strengthen the fight against crime.
Recently, the Edo State Government announced plans to establish special courts dedicated to handling cases involving kidnapping, armed robbery, ritual killings and related offences.
The proposed courts are expected to accelerate the prosecution of suspects and ensure swift delivery of justice.
Oba Ewuare II reiterated the need for collective action, insisting that both spiritual and conventional measures are necessary to address the security challenges confronting the nation.
