Nyong Battles Back to Win Commonwealth Games Weightlifting Silver

Nigeria's Ruth Nyong produced a remarkable comeback to win silver in the women's 48kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, overcoming early setbacks in the clean and jerk to secure a podium finish. Nyong finished with a total lift of 168kg, earning Nigeria another medal at the Games.

Nyong was in third place after the snatch, lifting 75kg, and came under pressure after failing her first two clean and jerk attempts at 93kg. With only one attempt remaining, the Nigerian held her nerve and successfully lifted the weight, raising her total to 168kg and moving into the silver-medal position.

India's Mirabai Chanu dominated the competition to claim gold, setting new Commonwealth Games records in both the snatch (85kg) and clean and jerk (105kg) for a winning total of 190kg. Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry took bronze with a total of 167kg, just one kilogram behind Nyong.

Nyong's resilience under pressure earned praise as Nigeria continued its medal push in Glasgow, with her final successful lift proving decisive in securing a place on the podium.
