No Evidence Linking ‘Sai Malami’ Group to Terrorism in Kebbi — Police
Kebbi Police said investigations found no evidence linking the “Sai Malami” group to terrorism, clarifying suspects arrested earlier faced criminal charges involving counterfeit currencies and suspected ritual items.
The Kebbi State Police Command has dismissed claims linking the group popularly known as “Sai Malami” to terrorism, stating that investigations have not established any evidence suggesting the group is a designated terrorist organisation or involved in terrorist activities.
The clarification was made on Friday in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Bashir Usman, following reports and social media claims alleging that the group had resurfaced in parts of Argungu Local Government Area as a terrorist organisation.
According to Usman, the command became aware of the reports and immediately commenced investigations using credible intelligence to verify the allegations.
“The police is aware of reports alleging the group’s resurgence in parts of Argungu Local Government Area and has commenced investigations using actionable intelligence to verify the claims,” he stated.
The police also addressed concerns surrounding the arrest of suspected members of the group in Zuru in February 2026.
Usman explained that the suspects were investigated and prosecuted over alleged criminal offences unrelated to terrorism.
He disclosed that items recovered from the suspects included suspected counterfeit currencies of different countries, including the Nigerian naira, United States dollar, CFA franc and Libyan dinar.
Other items allegedly recovered included suspected ritual or occult objects and related materials.
The command, however, stressed that no firearms were recovered from any of the suspects during the investigation.
According to the police, available evidence did not establish any terrorism-related offences against those arrested.
Usman reiterated the commitment of the Kebbi State Police Command to tackling all forms of criminality across the state while ensuring that offenders are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He warned that anyone found engaging in criminal activities would face the full weight of the law, regardless of affiliation.
The command also appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing unnecessary fear or panic.
It urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist ongoing investigations and improve public safety.
The police maintained that investigations into the recent claims regarding the “Sai Malami” group are still ongoing and assured residents that appropriate action would be taken against anyone found to be involved in criminal activities.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order across Kebbi State and urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies in preserving peace and security.
