NiMet Predicts Three Days of Sunshine, Thunderstorms Across Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of sunshine, cloudiness and thunderstorms across the country from Sunday to Tuesday, urging residents to take precautions against strong winds, heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding in vulnerable areas. The weather outlook, released in Abuja, indicates varying conditions across the northern, central and southern regions of Nigeria.

According to NiMet, the northern region will experience mostly sunny skies with patches of clouds, while isolated thunderstorms are expected over parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina and Kaduna at different times during the three-day forecast. The North-Central states are expected to witness sunshine and cloud cover in the mornings, with thunderstorms and moderate rainfall likely in the afternoons and evenings.

In the southern region, cloudy conditions are expected with light to moderate rainfall over several states during the mornings, followed by more widespread thunderstorms later in the day. NiMet warned that persistent rainfall along the coastal belt could increase the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas.

The agency advised residents to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy downpours, disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injuries from strong winds and falling branches. It also urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for safe flight planning and encouraged Nigerians to follow official weather updates.
