NiMet, NCCC to Sign MoU on Climate Services, Data Management

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to strengthen collaboration on climate services, climate data management and national climate resilience through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement followed a meeting between NiMet Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, and NCCC Director-General, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, aimed at advancing Nigeria's climate action agenda.

During the meeting, Prof. Anosike highlighted NiMet's role as the custodian of more than a century of meteorological and climate records, stressing that reliable weather and climate data are essential for climate trend analysis, risk assessments and the development of accurate climate projections. He said closer cooperation between both institutions would improve climate projections, strengthen early warning systems, standardise climate data and support joint research for evidence-based policymaking.

Anosike also noted that enhanced collaboration would help government agencies and climate-sensitive sectors access localised scientific information for climate adaptation and mitigation. He added that quality climate data is crucial for attracting international climate finance, suggesting that both organisations could jointly pursue funding for climate resilience, early warning systems and climate infrastructure projects.

In response, Dr. Majekodunmi welcomed the proposed partnership and praised NiMet's contribution to weather forecasting and climate services in Nigeria. Both agencies agreed that the MoU would cover climate services, climate data management, research, early warning systems, capacity development and other areas of mutual interest, reinforcing their shared commitment to strengthening Nigeria's resilience against climate change.
