Nigerian Army Named Africa’s Best in Counter-Terrorism Operations

The Nigerian Army has been named Africa’s Best National Army in Counter-Terrorism Operations for 2025 by African Security Watch, earning continental recognition for its sustained efforts against terrorism and violent extremism.

The award was formally presented to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Wednesday at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

According to the Nigerian Army, the honour recognises its operational achievements, strategic leadership and commitment to combating terrorism while enhancing regional security.

The award was presented by Major General Teriworie Gagariga, who had earlier received it on behalf of the Nigerian Army during the African Security Watch Awards Ceremony held in Banjul, The Gambia.

African Security Watch said the Nigerian Army was selected based on its performance in coordinated joint operations, intelligence-driven campaigns, civil-military cooperation, force development and capacity building.

The organisation noted that the Army’s operations have significantly weakened terrorist networks while contributing to improved national and regional security.

Receiving the award, Shaibu described the recognition as a tribute to the courage, professionalism and sacrifices of officers and soldiers serving across the country.

He said the honour reflects the dedication of military personnel who continue to confront security threats in difficult operational environments.

According to him, the award validates the effectiveness of the Nigerian Army’s evolving counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency strategies while reinforcing its position as a leading force in addressing complex security challenges across Africa.

The Army chief dedicated the recognition to officers and soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty, as well as their families for their unwavering support and sacrifices.

He said their commitment remains a source of inspiration for the Army’s mission to safeguard Nigeria and promote peace.

Shaibu reaffirmed the Army’s determination to sustain its operational gains through intelligence-led operations, improved training, enhanced collaboration with other security agencies and better welfare for personnel.

He also pledged that the Nigerian Army would continue its transformation into a more professional, adaptive and combat-ready force capable of responding effectively to emerging security threats.

The recognition further underscores the Nigerian Army’s growing influence in regional security operations and its contribution to efforts aimed at combating terrorism and violent extremism across the African continent.
