Nigeria, Liberia Move to Deepen Maritime Cooperation, Capacity Building
Nigeria and Liberia have pledged stronger maritime cooperation, focusing on capacity building, regional integration, youth employment and Blue Economy development to enhance Africa’s position in the global maritime industry.
Nigeria and Liberia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation, regional integration and capacity development as part of efforts to unlock Africa’s maritime potential and advance the continent’s Blue Economy agenda.
The Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dayo Mobereola, made the commitment while receiving the Honorary Consul of Liberia in Lagos, Dapo Akinosun, at the agency’s headquarters.
Mobereola described the engagement as a reflection of the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Liberia, particularly within the maritime sector. He noted that stronger collaboration among African countries is essential for driving maritime growth, improving regional integration and creating sustainable opportunities for young people.
According to him, enhanced cooperation between both nations would contribute significantly to maritime capacity development and help position African professionals for greater participation in the global maritime industry.
“The time has come for African nations to upscale maritime collaboration. The partnership between Nigeria and Liberia will help us build capacity, strengthen regional cooperation and create opportunities for African youths within the global maritime industry,” he stated.
The NIMASA boss also highlighted the importance of sea-time training and practical exposure for maritime professionals, stressing that such initiatives are critical to equipping African youths with the skills and experience required to compete internationally.
Mobereola further commended the Liberian government for supporting Nigeria’s successful bid for a Category C seat at the International Maritime Organization, describing the gesture as evidence of the productive relationship both countries have maintained over the years.
Earlier, Akinosun said the visit was aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and exploring new opportunities for deeper cooperation in maritime administration, safety, trade promotion and human capacity development.
He described the maritime industry as a vital driver of economic growth, regional integration and Blue Economy development across Africa.
Akinosun also praised NIMASA’s leadership for initiatives aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s maritime sector for sustainable growth, investment and international competitiveness, expressing Liberia’s readiness to deepen collaboration with Nigeria in advancing Africa’s maritime and economic aspirations.
