Netherlands March into World Cup Knockouts as Group Winners
The Netherlands defeated Tunisia 3-1 to finish top of Group F with seven points, avoiding Brazil in the Round of 32 and setting up a knockout clash against Morocco.
The Netherlands secured top spot in Group F at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Tunisia 3-1 on Thursday, earning a favourable Round of 32 fixture against Morocco instead of tournament favourites Brazil.
Ronald Koeman’s side produced a composed performance at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, taking full advantage of Tunisia’s defensive lapses to claim their second victory of the tournament and finish the group stage unbeaten with seven points.
The match began after concerns over a lightning storm threatened to delay kick-off, but play eventually got underway as scheduled.
Tunisia showed early intent, with Ismael Gharbi firing over the crossbar from close range in the opening minutes. However, that proved to be one of the few bright moments for the North Africans, who struggled to contain the Dutch attack for most of the contest.
The Netherlands opened the scoring when Tunisia midfielder Ellyes Skhiri inadvertently diverted Denzel Dumfries’ dangerous cross into his own net. The early breakthrough boosted Dutch confidence and they doubled their advantage moments later through Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey, who reacted quickest inside the penalty area to fire home from close range.
With a comfortable two-goal cushion, the Dutch dominated possession and controlled the tempo of the game, while their travelling supporters celebrated with Mexican waves long before halftime.
Tunisia improved after the restart and managed to reduce the deficit with a well-worked goal, briefly raising hopes of a comeback.
Those hopes were quickly extinguished when defender Jan Paul van Hecke restored the Netherlands’ two-goal lead with a powerful header shortly after the hour mark, effectively sealing the victory.
The result ensured the Dutch finished above Japan on goal difference after the Asian side drew 1-1 with Sweden in Arlington, Texas. Japan progressed as Group F runners-up, while Sweden also advanced to the knockout stage as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams.
Following the victory, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman urged his players to remain focused on their next opponents rather than looking too far ahead in the competition.
He described Morocco as a dangerous side with quality throughout the squad and warned that his team must be fully prepared for what promises to be a difficult Round of 32 encounter in Monterrey on Monday.
