NDC Debunks Rumours of Kwankwaso Leaving Party Over Kano Crisis
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially dismissed reports claiming Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is threatening to dump the party over internal candidate disputes in Kano.
The national leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially debunked rumours that former Kano State Governor and party chieftain, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is planning to leave the opposition coalition.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed circulating reports claiming that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso threatened to dump the party over internal disagreements regarding candidate selection in Kano State.
Addressing the speculation on Tuesday, the NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, described the rumours as baseless media conjectures orchestrated by political detractors aiming to destabilise the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Director admitted that while there were minor internal frictions regarding the sharing of political structures in Kano, they were nowhere near enough to cause Kwankwaso to abandon the platform.
“There is no truth in the statements that His Excellency Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is threatening to leave the NDC. That is far from it,” the NDC spokesperson stated. “In every political organisation, you must have disagreements. We are in the process of sorting out those differences, and we are open and sincere about carrying everybody along.”
The rumours of a rift began spreading after the Kano State chapter of the NDC adopted a 60/40 power-sharing formula for its local candidate list. The arrangement conceded 60 per cent of the structure to the Kwankwasiyya movement, while the party's pioneer members retained 40 per cent—a move that reportedly caused friction among some grassroots stakeholders.
However, Kwankwaso himself appeared to indirectly dispel the exit rumours. Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday night, the former governor shared updates about his ongoing engagements within the NDC.
“This evening, I hosted a highly productive meeting with the NDC candidates from Kogi State at my residence in Abuja. We had robust deliberations on the way forward and concrete strategies for our collective victory,” Kwankwaso wrote, signalling his continued commitment to the party's agenda.
Adding to the party's defence, Habibu Sale Mohammed, spokesman for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, also described the exit reports as false. He clarified that the movement had not registered any official grievances with the national body and that the recent party primaries were conducted smoothly and transparently in accordance with electoral guidelines.
The NDC leadership has therefore urged its supporters and the general public to disregard the rumours and remain focused as the party consolidates its structure ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
