Politician Who Swore on Qur’an to Remain Loyal to Kwankwaso Joins APC

Kabiru Adamu Abdullahi, a long-time ally of Kwankwasiyya leader and Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abdullahi announced his resignation from the NDC in a letter addressed to the party chairman of Kofar Ruwa Ward in Dala Local Government Area of Kano State.

The politician said his decision followed what he described as frustration over unfulfilled promises within the NDC, adding that he had chosen to join the APC and support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Abdullahi’s defection is notable because of his long-standing relationship with Kwankwaso, whom he has supported for nearly three decades.

He had previously reaffirmed his loyalty to the former Kano State governor by swearing on the Qur’an that he would remain committed to Kwankwaso, following his political disagreement with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

However, announcing his latest political move, Abdullahi said his experience in the NDC had left him disappointed, particularly over what he described as promises that failed to materialise.

“I have been with Kwankwaso for 29 years but have only benefited from failed promises. I will go to where I will be respected more,” he said.

The defection comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with politicians across party lines repositioning and reassessing their alliances.

Abdullahi said he would now work within the APC and support Tinubu’s bid for another term in office.

His move represents another shift in Kano’s politically competitive landscape, where Kwankwaso and the Kwankwasiyya movement have maintained significant influence over the years.

The development also highlights the growing realignment among political actors ahead of 2027, as opposition figures and former allies explore new platforms in preparation for the next general election.

Abdullahi’s resignation formally ends his membership of the NDC and marks a new chapter in his political career under the APC.
