NAFDAC Warns Against Misuse of Prescriptions, Dangers of Self-Medication Without Supervision

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern advisory to the Nigerian public regarding the escalating dangers of drug abuse, prescription misuse, and unsupervised self-medication. The apex regulatory body warned that treating illnesses without professional medical diagnosis and using pharmaceuticals outside authorized guidelines are primary drivers of chronic organ failure and sudden death across the federation.

The public health warning was delivered during a specialized advocacy and sensitization campaign organized by the agency. NAFDAC leadership expressed deep concern over the growing trend of citizens bypassing licensed healthcare professionals to purchase high-potency antibiotics, painkillers, and hormonal treatments based on personal assumptions or informal recommendations from neighbors.

According to the agency, self-medication not only masks the underlying symptoms of severe medical conditions but directly accelerates the global crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), rendering standard life-saving medications ineffective for future treatments.

“Bypassing proper clinical diagnostics to self-prescribe medications is a highly dangerous practice with severe long-term consequences,” the agency warned. “We are witnessing a troubling surge in preventable complications, particularly chronic kidney disease and liver damage, directly linked to the prolonged, unmonitored ingestion of over-the-counter painkillers and unverified orthodox or herbal combinations.”

Furthermore, NAFDAC reiterated its commitment to tightening market surveillance and cracking down on unregulated patent medicine stores and open-market drug hawkers who fuel this crisis by illegally dispensing controlled clinical substances without valid medical prescriptions.

The regulatory body concluded by urging citizens to always visit registered healthcare facilities for proper clinical diagnosis, verify the authenticity of their medicines using NAFDAC registration numbers, and adhere strictly to dosage regimens prescribed by qualified medical doctors or pharmacists.
