An Akwa Ibom High Court has sentenced a 36-year-old mother of four to life imprisonment after convicting her of attempting to murder a 12-year-old child. The court ruled that the prosecution proved its case and imposed the mandatory sentence prescribed by law.
An Akwa Ibom State High Court has sentenced a 36-year-old mother of four to life imprisonment after finding her guilty of attempting to murder a 12-year-old child. The judgment was delivered by Justice Ntong Effiong at the High Court in Essien Udim Local Government Area.
The court heard that the convict carried out the attack with the intention of killing the victim, but the child survived the incident. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence and witnesses which the court found sufficient to establish the offence beyond reasonable doubt.
In his ruling, Justice Effiong held that the prosecution had successfully proved its case and noted that the law prescribes life imprisonment as the mandatory sentence for attempted murder. He subsequently convicted the woman and sentenced her accordingly.
The court emphasised the need to uphold justice and protect vulnerable members of society, particularly children, from violent crimes. Legal observers said the judgment reinforces the judiciary's commitment to ensuring that serious offences attract appropriate punishment.
The case has drawn public attention in Akwa Ibom, with many residents describing the verdict as a strong message against violent attacks and crimes involving minors.
