Military Salary Hike Will Boost Anti-Insurgency Operations — Defence Minister

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has said the Federal Government's approval of a new salary structure for members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria will significantly strengthen the military's counter-insurgency operations by improving troop morale and operational effectiveness. He described the pay increase as a major investment in national security.

Speaking after President Bola Tinubu approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for military personnel, Badaru said improved welfare would motivate troops to remain committed to the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats confronting the country. He noted that personnel who are adequately rewarded are better positioned to carry out their duties with dedication and professionalism.

The minister explained that the new pay package forms part of the administration's broader efforts to strengthen the Armed Forces through improved welfare, better equipment and enhanced operational capacity. He added that the government remains committed to providing the military with the resources needed to tackle evolving security challenges across the country.

Under the new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, junior personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest increase of 80 per cent, while Warrant Officers to Colonels will get 50 per cent, and Brigadier-Generals to Generals will receive a 30 per cent increase. The review raises the Armed Forces' annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.

Badaru expressed confidence that the salary review, alongside ongoing military modernisation efforts, would further enhance the effectiveness of security operations and contribute to restoring peace in affected parts of the country.
