A new report estimates that Meta contributes about $820 million annually to Nigeria’s economy, with its platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp playing a major role in helping businesses expand reach, boost sales, and drive growth in the country’s digital and informal sectors.
Meta has contributed an estimated $820 million annually to Nigeria’s economy through its digital platforms, according to a new independent report on the country’s digital ecosystem.
The report shows that Meta’s family of apps, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, have become key tools for business growth, with about 81% of surveyed Nigerian businesses saying the platforms helped them expand their customer base beyond their immediate locations.
It also highlights the growing role of social commerce in Nigeria, where small and medium-sized enterprises increasingly rely on digital platforms to reach wider audiences, reduce marketing costs, and drive sales.
According to the findings, millions of Nigerian businesses now use Meta’s platforms to operate and scale, making social media a major driver of entrepreneurship and informal sector growth.
The report further notes that improved digital access and increased online activity are strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global digital economy, with projections suggesting even greater economic impact in the coming years as adoption deepens.
