Meningitis Outbreak Kills 34, Infects 254 in Sokoto

At least 34 people have died and 254 others have been infected following a meningitis outbreak across nine local government areas (LGAs) of Sokoto State.

The outbreak was confirmed by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Abubakar-Wurno, who said it had spread across multiple communities, prompting urgent response measures from the government and health authorities.

He explained that several of the deaths occurred at home before victims could access medical care, adding that some residents initially attributed the illness to spiritual causes, which delayed hospital treatment.

According to him, isolation centres have been established in Dogondaji and Kurawa communities in Tambuwal and Sabon Birni LGAs. He also confirmed that all 201 patients treated in government health facilities have been discharged.

The affected LGAs include Dange-Shuni, Kebbe, Shagari, Tambuwal, Wamakko, Sabon Birni, Bodinga, Kware, and Gada, with varying levels of infection recorded across the areas.

Laboratory tests confirmed cases of meningitis, indicating active transmission within affected communities.

Dr. Abubakar-Wurno explained that meningitis is a serious infection of the brain and spinal cord membranes, transmitted through respiratory droplets, especially in overcrowded and poorly ventilated environments.

He added that children between the ages of one and 15 were the most affected, while dry season conditions and overcrowding were worsening the spread.

The commissioner said the state government has intensified public awareness campaigns, urging residents to sleep in well-ventilated spaces and adopt preventive measures.

He also noted that surveillance systems had been strengthened, with health workers deployed across affected areas for monitoring, testing, and treatment support to contain the outbreak.
