A blockbuster showdown between two of world football’s most prolific forwards, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, will take centre stage on Friday as France and Norway battle for top spot in Group I at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The highly anticipated encounter, scheduled for Foxborough outside Boston, pits two unbeaten sides against each other, with both already through to the Round of 32 but eager to secure first place in the group.

Real Madrid forward Mbappe and Manchester City striker Haaland have both enjoyed outstanding starts to the tournament, scoring four goals each to sit just behind Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who leads the Golden Boot race with five goals.

France head into the fixture with a slight advantage after comfortable victories over Senegal and Iraq. Didier Deschamps’ side tops the group on goal difference and requires only a draw to finish first.

Norway, however, have also impressed, opening their campaign with a 4-1 victory over Iraq before edging Senegal 3-2 to confirm qualification for the knockout stage.

Haaland has embraced his first World Cup with trademark confidence, delivering decisive performances while also enjoying life away from the pitch.

Following Norway’s victory over Senegal, the 25-year-old dismissed suggestions that his side could challenge for the title and insisted he was unconcerned about facing France.

“To win the World Cup, absolutely not,” Haaland told Fox television.

“We’ve won 12 competitive games in a row now. I’m part of something special, making history, and I’m extremely proud to be Norwegian.”

The prolific striker also played down Friday’s challenge against the defending finalists.

“They’re probably going to win against us. They’re probably going to win the whole tournament,” he added.

France’s preparations have, however, been affected by personal circumstances involving head coach Didier Deschamps.

The French Football Federation confirmed that Deschamps temporarily left the team’s training camp following the death of his mother.

Assistant coach Guy Stephan will oversee the team for the decisive group encounter until Deschamps rejoins the squad.

With first place and a potentially more favourable knockout route at stake, Friday’s contest promises to be one of the biggest matches of the group stage.

The winner will finish atop Group I, while both Mbappe and Haaland will also be aiming to close the gap on Messi in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot award.
