Mbappe Makes World Cup History with Back-to-Back Golden Boot Awards

France captain Kylian Mbappe has become the first player in football history to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot award at two consecutive tournaments after finishing as the leading scorer at the 2026 World Cup.

The Real Madrid forward scored 10 goals in eight matches to finish ahead of Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the race for the tournament’s highest individual scoring honour.

Mbappe had previously claimed the Golden Boot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after scoring eight goals, making him the first player ever to retain the award across successive editions.

The 27-year-old also became the first footballer since West Germany legend Gerd Müller in 1970 to score 10 goals in a single World Cup tournament.

Only France’s Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in the 1958 World Cup, and Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis, who netted 11 goals in 1954, have recorded higher tallies in a single edition of the competition.

Mbappe further strengthened his place in football history by extending his record as the men’s all-time leading World Cup goalscorer with 22 career goals.

He moved one goal ahead of Messi after scoring twice in France’s third-place play-off against England, although Les Bleus eventually lost 6-4 to finish fourth.

His impressive tournament included braces against Senegal and Iraq during the group stage before adding goals against Sweden in the Round of 32, Paraguay in the Round of 16, Morocco in the quarter-finals and England in the third-place play-off.

Mbappe also converted the decisive penalty against Paraguay to help France progress to the quarter-finals.

Messi entered Sunday’s World Cup final with an opportunity to overtake Mbappe in the scoring race but failed to find the net as Argentina suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain.

The Argentine captain concluded the tournament with eight goals in eight appearances.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham and Norway striker Erling Haaland finished joint-third on the scoring chart after each scored seven goals during the competition.

France winger Ousmane Dembele and England captain Harry Kane completed the list of leading scorers with six goals apiece.

Mbappe’s record-breaking performance further cements his status among the greatest World Cup players in history, adding another remarkable achievement to an already outstanding international career and reinforcing his reputation as one of football’s finest forwards.
