A three-storey student hostel, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge, has collapsed in Amokpala, Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving an unknown number of occupants feared trapped beneath the rubble. The building, located beside Tonimas Filling Station, reportedly caved in late Sunday night, prompting an emergency response from security and rescue agencies.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that a police-led Joint Security Team immediately mobilised to the scene after receiving a distress call. The area was secured to prevent further danger while rescue operations commenced. The Anambra State Fire Service and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) also joined the operation to search for and rescue trapped victims.
Police spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga urged residents to remain calm, assuring the public that emergency responders were working tirelessly to save those trapped and assess the full extent of the disaster. Authorities have yet to confirm the number of casualties or people rescued as operations continue.
The cause of the building collapse has not been officially determined. However, the incident has renewed concerns about building safety and regulatory compliance, especially in student communities where multi-storey hostels accommodate large numbers of residents. Authorities are expected to launch an investigation after rescue efforts are concluded.
