LP Unveils Female Deputy Governorship Candidate in Benue
The Labour Party has unveiled Julie Obeta as its deputy governorship candidate in Benue, pledging greater women’s inclusion in governance and presenting a team focused on economic transformation.
The Labour Party (LP) has unveiled Mrs. Julie Obeta as its deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 governorship election in Benue State, marking a significant step in the party’s drive to promote women’s participation in politics and governance.
The announcement was made on Monday at the party’s state secretariat along Otukpo Road in Makurdi shortly after the emergence of the party’s governorship candidate, Mathias Byuan.
Speaking during the unveiling, Byuan said Obeta emerged through a broad consultative process involving party leaders and stakeholders from across the state.
According to him, the decision reflected the collective will of the party and its commitment to inclusive leadership.
“We have consulted widely with party stakeholders across the state and they unanimously selected Mrs. Julie Obeta. By the grace of God, she will become the first female deputy governor of Benue State in 2027,” he said.
The Labour Party described the nomination as a landmark development, noting that it is the first time the party has fielded a female deputy governorship candidate in Benue State.
Byuan said the choice of Obeta demonstrates the party’s determination to create opportunities for women and encourage greater female representation in leadership positions.
He added that the Labour Party is focused on building an inclusive government capable of addressing the developmental challenges facing the state.
The governorship candidate also outlined the party’s vision for economic growth, promising policies aimed at transforming Benue’s economy, creating jobs, and improving the welfare of residents if elected.
Obeta brings years of political and administrative experience to the ticket. She previously served as a member of the presidential campaign team of Goodluck Jonathan and later became chairman of Okpokwu Local Government Area between 2012 and 2015.
She was also offered an appointment as Special Assistant by Hyacinth Alia in 2023 but reportedly declined the position.
The Labour Party said Obeta’s emergence aligns with its broader agenda of promoting inclusivity, gender balance, and competent leadership as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
Party officials expressed confidence that the Byuan-Obeta ticket would provide a credible alternative for voters seeking change and development in Benue State.
