LAWMA Intensifies Waste Evacuation in Major Lagos Communities
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has expanded its waste removal operations across key communities in response to public complaints, deploying more trucks and personnel to restore sanitation standards.
The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its waste evacuation drive, deploying additional trucks, personnel, and equipment to clear accumulated refuse across several major communities in the state.
The expanded operation targets high-density areas that have experienced visible waste buildup in recent weeks, including parts of Ikeja, Mushin, Oshodi, Agege, Surulere, Ajah, and selected communities on the Lagos Mainland and Island.
According to LAWMA officials, the exercise is a direct response to public complaints and forms part of a broader strategy to restore sanitation standards and improve the overall cleanliness of Lagos.
The agency said it has increased the number of compaction trucks and tippers on the roads, while also strengthening collaboration with Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to ensure faster and more efficient waste collection.
In a statement, LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Mr. Ibrahim Adewuyi, said the authority is working round the clock to clear backlogs and return the affected areas to their usual clean state.
He appealed to residents and business owners to cooperate with sanitation workers by properly bagging their waste, paying PSP service fees on time, and avoiding indiscriminate dumping on roads, drainages, and medians.
Adewuyi warned that LAWMA would not hesitate to sanction individuals, markets, or estates found violating the state’s environmental sanitation laws.
The intensified waste removal drive comes after the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, publicly apologised to residents over recent lapses in waste management and assured them of urgent corrective measures.
The state government has also directed LAWMA to sustain the current momentum and ensure that waste is evacuated before it becomes a public health or environmental hazard.
LAWMA reiterated that maintaining a clean Lagos is a shared responsibility between the government, PSP operators, and citizens, and urged residents to play their part by adhering to sanitation guidelines.
The agency said further deployment of resources would continue in the coming days, with special attention given to markets, transport hubs, and densely populated residential areas.
