Lagos to Introduce Special Vehicle Number Plates for Persons with Disabilities

The Lagos State Government has commenced plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to promote inclusion, improve accessibility and enhance mobility across the state. The proposal was discussed during a meeting between the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) and the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored strategies for implementing the initiative.

Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as a significant step towards achieving Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's vision of building a more inclusive Lagos. He said the specialised number plates would improve the identification and recognition of persons with disabilities while making movement across the state easier for beneficiaries.

Muri-Okunola disclosed that discussions had already begun with the Federal Road Safety Corps to facilitate the introduction of the new number plates. He added that the agency would commence the necessary administrative processes and work closely with LASODA to ensure the successful rollout of the programme.

Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, explained that the proposed scheme is intended to benefit all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents of children with disabilities and their caregivers. She noted that the initiative would improve identification, accessibility and support while reinforcing the state's commitment to equal opportunities and inclusive governance.

The proposal forms part of broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to strengthen disability inclusion and implement the provisions of the Lagos State Special People's Law, which seeks to eliminate discrimination and promote equal participation for persons with disabilities in all aspects of society.
