Lagos Denies Replacing KAI with NURTW in Enforcement Duties
The Lagos State Government has denied reports that it replaced KAI with the NURTW for enforcement duties, stating that KAI remains the official environmental enforcement agency and no policy change has been made.
The Lagos State Government has dismissed reports suggesting that the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) enforcement team has been replaced by the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in carrying out environmental and traffic control duties across the state.
In a clarification issued amid growing public reactions, officials stressed that there has been no policy change transferring the responsibilities of KAI to the transport union. They described the claim as misleading and urged residents to disregard it.
The government reiterated that KAI remains the official agency responsible for enforcing environmental sanitation laws, maintaining order in public spaces, and supporting efforts to curb indiscriminate behaviour in the state.
Authorities further explained that while the state continues to engage various stakeholders, including transport unions, such collaborations do not amount to handing over enforcement powers. They emphasised that the role of unions such as the NURTW is limited to their statutory transport operations and not regulatory enforcement.
The clarification comes amid heightened sensitivity over the activities of transport unions in Lagos, particularly concerning road management and public order. Officials assured that all enforcement agencies remain under the coordinated supervision of the state government and continue to operate within their defined mandates.
Residents were also encouraged to rely only on verified government communications for accurate information regarding policy changes and public administration.
