La Liga Barça Seal Cancelo Return to Bolster Defence

Barcelona have completed the permanent signing of Portuguese defender João Cancelo on a free transfer, with the full-back signing a contract until June 2029.

Cancelo, 32, returns to the Catalan club for his third spell after previously spending two periods on loan at Barcelona.

The Portugal international terminated his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal by mutual consent before completing his return to the Spanish champions.

Cancelo first joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester City during the 2023/2024 season, making 42 appearances.

He returned to the club in January 2026 on another loan deal from Al Hilal and helped Hansi Flick’s side retain the La Liga title.

Across his previous spells, Cancelo made 65 appearances for Barcelona, scoring six goals and providing nine assists.

His ability to operate on either flank gives Flick additional flexibility in defence, while his attacking qualities are expected to provide another option in Barcelona’s build-up and final-third play.

Cancelo expressed his happiness at returning to Barcelona permanently, describing the club as special to him and saying he was determined to help the team win more trophies.

The defender began his senior career at Benfica before playing for Valencia, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Al Hilal.

His return strengthens Barcelona’s squad as the club prepares to defend its La Liga title and compete in domestic and European competitions during the 2026/2027 season.
