Kwara Orders Demolition of Unsafe Two-Storey Building Over Collapse Fears

The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate demolition of a dilapidated two-storey building in the Oke-Suna area of Ilorin East Local Government Area, declaring the structure unsafe and a serious threat to lives and property. The building was also sealed by the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) following complaints from residents over fears that it could collapse at any time.

According to a statement by KWEPA's Press Secretary, Aliyu Amode, the enforcement action followed reports from members of the community, prompting officials to carry out an emergency inspection. During the inspection, residents disclosed that they had repeatedly warned the property's owner about the deteriorating condition of the building and urged remedial action, but the warnings were allegedly ignored.

Reacting to the findings, KWEPA General Manager Jide Aina described the structure as a grave danger to public safety and directed the owner to commence its immediate demolition. He warned that if the directive was not obeyed, the state government would carry out the demolition itself to prevent a possible tragedy and safeguard neighbouring residents and properties.

Aina reaffirmed the government's commitment to preventing avoidable disasters through proactive environmental enforcement and urged residents to continue reporting abandoned or distressed buildings and other environmental hazards for prompt intervention. He said the state would continue enforcing safety regulations to protect lives and property across Kwara.
