Kwankwaso Unveils Gwarzo as Kano NDC Governorship Candidate for 2027

Former Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo has emerged as the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 elections in Kano State.

The announcement was made by former Kano State Governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, following consultations with party stakeholders and political allies across the state.

Kwankwaso stated that the selection of Gwarzo was guided by principles of loyalty, competence, fairness, and political experience as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 governorship election in Kano.

The former deputy governor, who recently left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alongside several Kwankwasiyya loyalists, has remained a major political figure in Kano politics and a close ally of Kwankwaso.

Alongside Gwarzo’s emergence, former APC governorship candidate Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna was also announced as the NDC candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial seat.

Political tension had reportedly intensified in Kano in recent days amid speculation over who would secure the opposition bloc’s governorship ticket. Several stakeholders within the movement had argued over zoning considerations and electoral strategy before the final decision was reached.

Supporters of Gwarzo described his emergence as a reward for long-standing loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya political structure, while analysts say the development could reshape the political contest in Kano ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers believe the NDC’s growing influence in Kano, backed by key opposition figures and recent defections, may increase competition in one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states.
