Why Tinubu May Win 2027 Presidential Election

Former Cross River State Governor and presidential candidate Donald Duke has warned that President Bola Tinubu could secure victory in the 2027 presidential election if opposition parties fail to form a united front.

Duke made the assessment while speaking during an opposition gathering focused on developing a strategy for the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the major challenge facing the opposition is fragmentation, with several political parties and influential politicians pursuing separate interests instead of working towards a common objective.

Duke argued that the current political environment could favour the incumbent if opposition parties enter the election divided.

He said the opposition must learn from previous elections and understand that individual political ambitions could undermine efforts to defeat the ruling party.

The former governor stressed that unity would be essential if opposition parties hope to present a credible alternative to the electorate in 2027.

Duke was among opposition figures who participated in discussions aimed at developing a framework for cooperation ahead of the next presidential election.

The gathering brought together representatives of several opposition parties and political groups, with discussions centred on the possibility of producing a common platform and eventually agreeing on a presidential candidate.

Duke said he was prepared to support whoever emerged as the opposition’s consensus candidate, regardless of personal considerations.

He maintained that the objective should be larger than individual ambitions, arguing that political leaders must be willing to make sacrifices if they genuinely want to provide an alternative government.

The former governor also warned that opposition politicians could repeat the mistakes of previous elections if they failed to coordinate their activities.

The 2027 presidential contest is expected to feature President Tinubu seeking a second term, while several opposition figures are positioning themselves for the presidency.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi and other opposition politicians have remained central to discussions about a possible coalition.

However, disagreements over leadership, party structures and the choice of a presidential candidate continue to pose challenges to opposition unity.

Duke’s comments came as opposition parties began efforts to establish mechanisms for collaboration, including committees responsible for political strategy, communication, legal matters and electoral planning.

He said the opposition must place national interest above personal ambition if it hopes to present a serious challenge in 2027.
